It is my beleif that everybody who wishes to should have the opportunity to have a little bit of garden to grown their own vegetables or herbs or flowers and due to the demand for allotments being much greater than the ability of the Corporation to supply plots then we should increase our efforts to provide them.
Sea Front and Strand Street
Douglas promenade is the display case for our town so if it looks scruffy and unkempt then that reflects poorly on all of us. We need to keep up the pressure on our cleansing department and businesses in town to keep up with selfish and lazy people who dirty our town.
Douglas Corporation should strive to protect the vulnerable in our society by providing and continuing to provide affordable housing. This is an extremely sensitive issue but sometimes the Council is not allowed to manage its own resouces or policies. I am keen to educate tenants and the public about which parts of housing policy can be effectively controlled by the Council and which parts seem to be imposed.
I shall always support tourism in Douglas and the horse trams in particular. As the defining feature of Douglas we would lose some of our collective soul if we were to lose the horse trams. Victoria ward houses the largest and best hotels in Douglas and anything that can be done to service them should be done I shall do my utmost to urge the Council to do so.
Poorly maintained, unsightly properties and derelict properties
It is sad that we have so many landlords who allow their properties to fall into poor condition, we could use social media to shame these people into improving their properties. It also seems unfair that some landlords are rewarded for allowing their property to become uninhabitable by giving them exemption from paying rates. I would try to restrict such a rates holiday to say 4 years or even attempt to put a charge on the building to recover rates upon a sale.
